While I was in Holland this summer, I found out that my aunt and uncle would soon be celebrating their 50th wedding anniversary. Well, today's the big day, so from all of us here in Spain, Happy Anniversary!
Their story began in Wirdum, a small Friesian village in the North of Holland, where my mother's family lived (to see some great pictures of this lovely village visit the Beeldbank Leeuwarden, and type in "Wirdum"). A young man named Wiebe moved to the village to take up a position as a teacher. He met Jelly (my mother's older sister) while ice skating on the canals one winter, they fell in love, and the rest is history. They were married on the 27th of August, 1957, and they have made it through half a century of "For better, for worse, for richer, for poorer, in sickness and in health", 5 children, and 12 grandchildren...Now that's some achievement!
Here's a picture I found at my mom's house, of them in front of the church where they were married.
And here's a picture we took of them this summer, almost 50 years later in front of the same church.
Congratulations on 50 years together, and we wish you many more in the future!
